How to Do a Twisted Bun on 4C Hair (Easy Protective Style)
A high twisted bun is one of those styles that looks intricate but comes together with just a few tools and about 20 minutes. It keeps your edges sleek, shows off your natural texture up top, and works for everything from a workday to a night out. Here's exactly how to get the look and everything you need to recreate it.
What you'll need
A clean setup makes this style go from "okay" to sharp. Here's the short list:
- A rat-tail comb for clean, precise parts on the twists
- Edge control to lay your edges smooth and keep them that way
- An edge brush (double-sided works best for detail)
- Styling gel or foam for a sleek, frizz-free base
- A spray bottle of water to keep hair damp and workable
- Snag-free elastics to anchor the bun without breakage
- A wide-tooth comb to shape and add volume to the bun
- Lightweight hair oil for shine and a finished look (Odele is my fav, very light weight!)
- A satin scarf or bonnet to protect it overnight
Find all of these on Amazon, I've linked the exact types I'd reach for above.
Step-by-step
1. Prep your hair. Lightly mist your hair until it's damp (not soaking) and detangle gently with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Damp hair is far easier to twist and lay.
2. Part your sections. Use the rat-tail comb to part clean sections from your hairline toward your crown, these are the rows your twists will follow.
3. Create your flat twists. Working one section at a time, two-strand twist each row flatly against your scalp, moving from the hairline up toward the crown. Add a little gel as you go to keep each twist smooth and tight.
4. Gather the bun. Once your twists reach the crown, gather all the remaining hair into a high ponytail and secure it with a snag-free elastic.
5. Shape and pick it out. Fluff the gathered hair with your wide-tooth comb to build that round, full bun shape. The more evenly you pick it, the rounder it looks.
6. Lay your edges. Apply edge control along your hairline and use the edge brush to sculpt your baby hairs. This step is small but it's what ties the whole look together.
7. Finish. Smooth a few drops of oil over the twists for shine, and you're done.
Make it last
- Tie your edges down with the satin scarf for 5-10 minutes after laying them so they set.
- Sleep in a satin bonnet to keep the bun and twists fresh for 2-3 days.
- A light re-mist and quick edge touch-up in the morning revives it instantly.
This is one of my go - to styles that is not only quick but can last up to a week with good maintenance. Low manipulation hairstyles like this is the best way to maintain our strands and help foster growth.
